The Wix website builder is online software that enables anyone with internet access to design a Flash website. The graphic editor interface is simple enough for anyone to customize a free website, with the help of Wix’s archive of templates. However, starting less than a year ago, Wix initiated a project connecting Wix with professional web designers who are experienced with Wix. Most Wix users who opt for these professional services are small businesses or home offices, or individuals who prefer completely customized websites, without the use of templates.
Via the Wix Designers Directory, users can browse through samples of Wix websites created by each website designer. Contact form widgets are linked to each designer’s name. Rates and deadlines are discussed individually between the designer and the client.
The beta version of the Directory is slated for release in the next 1-3 weeks and will be known as “Arena”. According to the Wix Director of Design Community, Brandon Kreiss, “the Arena will be a more robust directory and will enhance the designer-selection process for Wix users.” There are currently 48 designers available for hire. The new directory will include around 70 designers. Many Wix designers are experienced Wix users themselves, who have had successful experiences with the software.
The revamped “Arena” designer directory will expose users to a wider sample of each designer’s Wix website portfolio. Client recommendations will be displayed to increase credibility of successful designers. Reward incentives for designers will include banner advertisements and marketing budgets on Google. Kreiss also envisions the assembly of specialized design teams with professionals working together on the website design, SEO and marketing strategy. Plans to recruit new designers include contacting agencies experienced in working with small businesses.
Wix provides technical and customer support for the bulk of its users who prefer a more do-it-yourself approach to their websites. The Wix Help Center is a wiki website with articles on every aspect of using the free website builder, as well as video tutorials. A Wix forum offers a place to post questions and converse with other Wix users. Premium users who upgrade from their free accounts receive additional support.????
Wix was established in 2005 and has its headquarters in NY and offices in Tel-Aviv. It is backed by Mangrove Capital Partners, Bessemer Venture Partners and Benchmark Capital.
